As of February 2016, reports of online dating-related rape have risen by
more than 450 percent in six years.
The surge in online dating has given rise to a new kind of sexual offender.
• The number of reports of people raped during their first face-to-face
meeting following initial contact continues to increase at an alarming rate.
• Approximately one in four college aged women is date raped or
experiences an attempted date rape during her college years.
• 74% of the perpetrators and 55% of the victims of rape within a
nationally representative sample of college students had been drinking
alcohol.
• At least 42% of women who are date raped don’t tell anyone about it.
• Sadly, survivors of rape and sexual assault are more likely than nonvictims
to attempt or consider suicide.
